Interviewing Dr. Mikell is always fun because I love talking about detoxing. Toxins are fascinating… think about all of the places toxins live in today’s world, and how we really can’t avoid them. This can be a downer topic, but our conversation is incredibly empowering and leaves you with ways you can truly support the detoxification process in your body and live your best life. I’ve lead several group detoxes and both myself and my clients have had amazing results.
Dr. Mikell originally discovered detoxing through a very personal struggle she dealt with where she experienced extreme brain fog and fatigue. Even though she was eating right, she discovered that her body’s detoxification system wasn’t working properly. She has since made it her mission to create her own detoxification program so that others don’t have to deal with the things she did. I love her message:
We can’t change our environment, but we can change how our bodies live in the environment. I want to equip and empower people to be more in control of their body, to fire up those detox factories and get things eliminated correctly and properly.
As mentioned, toxins are fairly unavoidable. We can do everything we can to eliminate them such as not drinking out of plastic cups, lids, or Styrofoam as well as being mindful of what we put on our skin through our beauty products, and of course what food we put into our bodies. However, we still have to support the body’s ability to detoxify itself.
On a basic level, our detox factory is our body’s way of packaging up toxins and either pooping, peeing, sweating, or breathing them out. In order to do this, our body needs key nutrients for the toxins to bind to, and help it do the work of excreting them. If the factory isn’t working properly, the extra toxins are stored in the body, often in our fat cells.
How do you know if your detox system isn’t working properly? Some symptoms include: poor memory, brain fog, headaches, fatigue, insomnia, binge eating, swollen ankles and feet, mood swings, and PMS to name a few.
We discuss the misconception that detoxing is more than just eating right and having a healthy functioning liver and kidneys. Detoxing happens in every single cell of our bodies, and we need the proper nutrients to drive the factories such as B-vitamins, amino acids, and fiber to bind to toxins and eliminate them. So, we constantly need to be replenishing those foods.
What is kind of alarming to me is that we put more thought into our car maintenance than our body maintenance.
Mikell believes in ensuring we get enough protein when we are detoxing – that’s about 20 grams per meal equivalent to 3 eggs or a regular, organic chicken breast. The body needs the right amino acids to run the detox factory, which is why Mikell is vehemently against the Master Cleanse. She is okay with juicing if it’s mostly green vegetables (with the pulp!) and not an overload of fruits and sugar. Since protein is such a key part of detox, she doesn’t recommend juicing without adding in protein.
Mikell believes in cleansing a minimum of 2 times per year, but 4 is best.
